What is Domestic Violence?
Under Tennessee law (T.C.A. § 39-13-111), domestic violence is defined as an assault against a family or household member. Related offenses may include:

    • Homicide
    • Aggravated or Sexual Assault

    • Protective Order Violations

Q: Where do I report domestic violence?

    • If it’s an emergency, call 911.
    • For non-emergencies, call 615-862-8600 to file a police report.
    • To meet with a detective, call the Domestic Violence Unit at 615-880-3000.

Q: When will I receive court information?

    • If an arrest is made, a Victim Witness Coordinator from our office will contact you.
      • If the defendant is in jail, court will occur within 5 days.
        • If you haven’t received information, call the DA’s Office immediately.
      • If the defendant is released on bond, you’ll receive a letter with court details within a week.

Q: Do I need an attorney?

    • No, you do not need an attorney for the criminal case.
    • If you’re filing for an Order of Protection, you may hire an attorney for that civil matter. Legal representation is recommended.

Q: Can I drop the charges?

    • No. Only the Assistant District Attorney decides whether to proceed with charges. However, your input matters and will be considered.

Q: What should I bring to court?
Bring anything that supports your case, including:

    • Photos/videos of injuries or property damage
    • Repair receipts or estimates
    • Caller ID records
    • Witnesses (family, coworkers, neighbors)

Q: Do I have to appear in court?

    • Yes. If you receive a subpoena, you are legally required to attend.
    • Call your Victim Witness Coordinator if you’re unsure about your court date.

Q: Will the defendant be in court?

    • Yes.
      • If in jail: they appear only when their case is called.
      • If on bond: they will be present in the courtroom.
